More new buses for Hull roads

Another 10 new double-deck buses go on the roads in the Hull area this weekend as part of the East Yorkshire bus company’s continued investment in the renewal of its fleet.            

Eight of the new ten latest buses, together worth about £1.7m, are replacing older single-deck buses on the group of routes which run between Hull city centre, the Wold Road area and Willerby, marking a significant upgrade for these busy routes.  The other two will work mainly on another of East Yorkshire’s most popular routes, the 105, which runs between the city centre and Cottingham.            

EYMS chairman, Peter Shipp, said, “These are the second 10 of 20 new double-decks delivered to us this year, the first ones came in the spring and are already running on several of our interurban routes radiating from Hull.  These latest buses will mark a major step forward for the Willerby Road routes, particularly since increasing passenger numbers on these routes mean that the single-decks used for the last 10 years are no longer big enough.  The new double-decks will offer more seats and higher quality, and to make the public aware of the improvements and to try and encourage more people to try the bus we are mounting a major marketing campaign in the next few weeks, including leaflets which will be going to every home in that area.”            

“We know through surveys that people who use buses regularly have a far higher opinion of them than those who never use public transport, and we are hoping to persuade some local people who never use buses that our bus services in Hull are far better than they may think.”            

“This year’s deliveries bring to a total of around £53m the amount we have spent on new buses since 1987 when EYMS came under local private ownership.” The buses were officially ‘launched’ today at a short ceremony at the company’s head office on Anlaby Road.  They feature more comfortable seats, wheelchair access, and internal and external CCTV, and have engines built to the latest low emission exhaust standards.

NOTE TO EDITORS

The buses are based on the Volvo B9TL chassis with Volvo B9B 260hp 9.4litre engines and six-speed ZF fully automatic gearboxes.  Bodywork is the Eclipse Gemini design by Wrightbus of Ballymena in Northern Ireland, with seating for 74 and room for 16 standees.  These last ten of the 2009 delivery to EYMS also feature the ‘new-look’ front design.
