Background

A training session in progress

Welcome to EYMS Group Limited’s training division, "EYMS Bus & Coach Training" who provide comprehensive training to their subsidiary company, East Yorkshire Motor Services Limited for all their bus and coach operations across Kingston-upon-Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, Scarborough, and parts of North Yorkshire.

In addition, the division supplies training to other EYMS Group subsidiary companies, Finglands Coachways based in Manchester and Whittle Coach and Bus based in Worcestershire.

A training bus

EYMS Group's main subsidiary, East Yorkshire Motor Services Ltd., has been serving the Hull area for over 80 years so has unrivalled experience of carrying millions of passengers safely each year on local bus, express services and holiday tours throughout the region, nationally, and to western Europe.

This experience includes the provision of initial and in-service training for the 500 drivers employed, many of whom have earned NVQ Level 2 certificates and achieved awards for many years' safe driving in the scheme run by the Road Operators' Safety Council (ROSCO), of which EYMS is an active member.

A training session in progress

EYMS Bus & Coach Training is staffed by five full time qualified Driving Instructors, supported by a team of depot trainers, and NVQ qualified assessors/internal verifiers, all overseen by a full time Training Manager based at the EYMS Group head office in Hull.

Comprehensive quality training covers full Company induction for either bus or coach operations for non-PCV driving licence holders with full theory and practical support to achieve their PCV licence, with further training for existing PCV licence holders joining the EYMS team.

Driver CPC

The Driver CPC is short for 'Driver Certificate of Professional Competence'.

It is a new qualification that all professional bus, coach and lorry drivers will require if they want to drive professionally. Driver CPC is being introduced across the European Union to maintain high driving standards.

The aims of the Driver CPC are to:

  • Improve road safety.
  • Ensure drivers continually update their skills and knowledge.
  • Recognise and accredit the knowledge and skills required for professional bus, coach and lorry drivers.
  • Raise the status of bus, coach and lorry drivers to promote driving as a career.

Drivers who already hold a bus, coach or lorry driving licence on the start of the introduction date of the Driver CPC will have 'acquired rights' for the following 5 years and will not need to hold a Driver CPC during that period.

However, they will need to start work towards their Driver CPC by completing the CPC periodic training if they wish to continue driving professionally beyond those 5 years.

CPC Periodic Training is regular training that will continue throughout a bus, coach or lorry driver's professional driving career.

Every professional driver will need to complete 35 hours of CPC periodic training every 5 years; this periodic training can be delivered in blocks of 7 hours.

New drivers' Initial Qualification

Drivers obtaining or applying for a bus, coach or lorry licence after the implementation dates will not have acquired rights. They will also not be able to obtain their first Driver CPC by taking their CPC periodic training on its own. They will have to pass an initial qualification before being able to drive professionally.

The initial qualification is in two parts:

  • A Driver CPC theory test – which is in two modules and lasts 4 hours in total with case studies.
  • A Driver CPC practical test – which is again in two modules lasting 2 hours in total and includes demonstration elements similar to the 'show me, tell me' part of the existing practical car driving test.
