Celebrating Clean Air Day with announcement of £6m investment
East Yorkshire, the Hull-based bus company, is celebrating Clean Air Day with the announcement of a £6m investment in new buses to help transform bus travel in Hull and Scarborough.
The order will put 8 brand new single deck buses and 19 double deck buses on the streets of East Yorkshire, all meeting the highest Euro 6 environmental standards and helping keep our air clean and free from pollution.
The first batch of single deck buses will arrive at the end of summer and will be used on the company’s popular Service 7/7A circular routes between Scarborough and Eastfield. The double deckers will arrive in two batches, with the first 11 entering service in autumn this year, and will be used on routes in and around Hull. The final batch of double deckers will arrive early in 2020.
The new buses will all feature comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi, USB charging points and next stop announcement systems.
All buses arriving this year will be locally built at the ADL factory in Scarborough, helping support jobs and the local economy.
The buses will build on East Yorkshire’s existing investment, which has already seen £2m of new coaches, two new low-emission single deck buses and eight refurbished Coaster buses join the fleet in the last few months.
East Yorkshire is keen to make it clear that buses are part of the solution, not the problem, when it comes to improving air quality, with continued investment in environmentally friendly buses that also provide a viable alternative to many car journeys and can help ease congestion.
Commenting on the investment, Martijn Gilbert, Managing Director of East Yorkshire’s parent company Go North East, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing these buses into the East Yorkshire fleet and further improving services for our customers.
“If we are serious about improving air quality then we have to properly embrace public transport and tackle rising congestion. These buses represent a major investment from us as we continue to play our part in supporting the mass mobility and connectivity of the communities we serve by providing high quality, dependable and green public transport services.”
