Training programme reaches major milestones
Hull-based EYMS Group which runs East Yorkshire Motor Services and Scarborough and District buses has a very well-established driver training programme both for initial recruits and in-house driver training, and the company has made great strides in training its drivers to NVQ Level 2 standard. Dan Heffer of the company’s Bridlington depot is the 250th driver to achieve NVQ Level 2 in PCV Driving (Bus and Coach) and has just been presented with his certificate by EYMS chairman Peter Shipp. This means that over half of East Yorkshire’s drivers have now achieved the same standard.
At more or less the same time Beverley Depot became the first to have all its drivers achieve NVQ Level 2, thus marking another milestone in the training programme, which EYMS believes to be one of the best in the bus industry in relation to its size.
EYMS chairman Peter Shipp said today that the company has always regarded training as extremely important. “We have spent a lot of time and effort in developing a very sophisticated training programme, not only for our drivers but other staff as well, and we have been particularly keen to ensure that the training we give really does help staff perform their duties as we are determined not to train simply for training's sake.”
“I am delighted that we have made such progress, due almost entirely to the efforts and commitment of our training manager and his team of driving instructors and NVQ assessors who have also reached major milestones in the last few weeks. The training manager Darren Kendrew and the six instructors have achieved formal City and Guilds Teacher qualifications and presenting them with their certificates gave me an opportunity to commend them on their success.”
“In addition Assessor and Internal Verifier awards have been made to members of the Assessor Team who assess the company’s drivers to NVQ standards.”
“Feedback from drivers is universally positive and without exception they tell me they enjoyed the NVQ process and found it useful for their job.”
NOTE TO EDITORS
EYMS formally established its training division as ‘EYMS Bus & Coach Training’ in 2008 and is now offering CPC training modules to third parties, with some early success. For more details see the Training page.
