300th driver receives NVQ certificate

Published on

EYMS Bus and Coach Training – the training arm of the Hull-based bus and coach operator EYMS Group Ltd., which won the Training Excellence award in last year’s Hull Daily Mail Business Awards, has announced the 300th NVQ level 2 certificate to be awarded to the company’s drivers.

Krystina Sharpe, from the company’s Hull depot, was presented with the certificate and badge by EYMS chairman Peter Shipp at a short ceremony today when several more drivers from amongst the 18 who recently qualified also received their NVQ level 2 certificates.

Two thirds of the company’s 480 drivers have now achieved and many others are working towards this qualification which sets out to officially recognise the high level of driving competence which EYMS says it expects of all its drivers. The award is gained through on-the-job assessment and monitoring of the candidates’ work and skills, and production of an individual portfolio designed to demonstrate the drivers’ knowledge of a wide variety of relevant issues such as defensive driving, customer care, and reporting procedures.

The NVQ programme, which has been delivered ‘in-house’ since 2001, runs alongside the increased training programme now required by the new bus and coach ‘Driver Certificate of Professional Competence’ (Driver CPC).  All this is undertaken by the EYMS team of six instructors working under the training manager Darren Kendrew, supported by several assessors chosen by a special selection process from amongst the company’s more experienced drivers. The whole programme is closely monitored by external verifiers and auditors from outside EYMS who regularly give it a clean bill of health.

Special attention is now being given to training for fuel-efficient driving as part of several initiatives to reduce the company’s diesel fuel bill, which is now running at almost £4 million a year, and EYMS Bus and Coach Training was one of the first UK bus operators to be approved to deliver the Department for Transport ‘SAFED’ (Safe And Fuel Efficient Driving) training programme earlier this year, which to date has been delivered to over 100 drivers with some very encouraging early results.
